Comic Review - Captain Britain and MI13: Vampire State

It took me a while to warm to Paul Cornell's interpretation of Pete Wisdom in the character's rocky solo series but here, as the kingpin of MI13 and master tactician of British superheroes, he's on top form so fair play. Indeed, Cornell writes strong for everyone here from Brian (whose relationship with Meggan, one of the most charming, warm and real of the whole Marvel Universe, is captured perfectly), Blade and Dane Whitman right down to a significant cameo from Doctor Doom.

The plot is that Vlad Tepes, a.k.a. Dracula, has set his sights on invading Britain and MI13 have to stop him. It's generally very nicely done with some neat continuity references, a well-balanced set of scripts, some marvellous artwork from Leonard Kirk and a few interesting twists. The only bit that really lets it down is a tedious fake-out midway through. Aside from that the trade is very strong and pure manna for Marvel UK fans with several interesting cameos thrown in.
